LES Celebrates 10th Anniversary as a Green Star School….
2017 marks the 10 Year Anniversary for Lyons Elementary as a Green Star School. We will celebrate this monumental event during the week of September 18th-22nd. The Boulder County Eco Cycle is bringing the Hawk Quest Program to LES on September 19th for an all school assembly. They will also be on hand during recesses, throughout the week, providing fun student activities.
The purpose of the Green Star Schools Program is to honor, support, and recognize the important work that teachers, schools, and districts are doing to advance environmental sustainability; to create healthy and vibrant work and learning communities that enhance academic performance; and to foster intellectual growth, creativity, and innovation through an experiential program where students learn environmental stewardship and take action to reduce the school’s environmental footprint.
Lyons Elementary has taken many steps towards excellence in this area including the purchase of reusable dish sets in classrooms, holding Zero Waste Events, forming the Eco Club who provides support with classroom trash audits and training and more.
Our Eco/Garden Club provides training videos, harvesting and planting vegetables in the LES Garden and is partnering with the CU Ralphie’s Green Stampede at CU Sports Events this year.
