4th Grade Discovers Lyons, Colorado at the Red Stone Museum

4th Grade has quite a few questions they will be searching out the answers to…

What physical characteristics led various cultural groups to select the places they did for settlement in Colorado?

  • How does the physical environment affect human activity?
  • How does human activity affect the environment?
  • Why is it important to know the sequence of events and people in Colorado history?
  • How can primary sources help us learn about the past or create more questions about our state’s history?

Our 4th grade students are working on developing an understanding of local and state history through an in depth partnership with the Lyons Redstone Museum.  Located on our campus, we have an incredible opportunity for students to use primary source materials to learn about history first hand.

Students started the year by participating in a ‘guided looking’ activity, where they explored people, events, and artifacts from the museum’s collection.  Then, they went a step further and gathered information about an exhibit of particular interest to them.

Students are now developing a timeline, cataloging the museum’s exhibits to determine what topics might be missing from our local history.  Once identified, students will then work towards the end of year project of creating an exhibit for the museum.  Students may also choose to build a scavenger hunt for younger students and museum visitors as they explore the many local and state artifacts!
