Lyons Feeder Reading Challenge

Join us for a fun PK -12 challenge!

Check out the WALL OF FAME!

What is the Lyons 100K Extended Break Reading Challenge?
The Lyons 100K Extended Break Reading Challenge is a Lyons Feeder PK-12 initiative! It is an opportunity for students to read over the extended break, engage in a fun and healthy competition, and maintain community and connection during our extended break— all by reading for enjoyment.

The aim of the Challenge is to encourage students to read at least 20 minutes each day from a text of their choice from the online district library (instructions below) or from home during the spring break holidays. Books, graphic novels, magazines, newspapers, and audio books all count!

Rewards and Recognition:

  • Each student can get their picture on the Wall of Fame on our website when they reach 300 minutes of total reading over our extended break.

  • The top 5 readers at each level (elementary, middle, and high school) will get to order 2 books of their choice for our school/classroom libraries.

  • The grade level within each school (elementary, middle, and high school) that has the highest student average of minutes gets the honor of wearing hats at school for an entire week.

We also have a PK-12th grade Lyons feeder goal to read 100,000 minutes by March 29th! If we meet this challenge Dr. Smith and Mr. Moore will throw down in a live-streamed challenge, to be determined by a vote of Reading Challenge participants.

Academic honesty is paramount to this activity! All students should be honest about the minutes they are reading. This is only fun if we all agree to abide by the spirit of this contest…which is to read and maintain a sense of community over the extended break. Please be honest in your submissions. Any student deemed by administration to have been dishonest about reading amounts will risk personal disqualification.

Accessing the Lyons 100K Extended Spring Break Reading Challenge

Starting Monday, March 16th, 2020, your student can enter their reading minutes throughout the 2 weeks of extended spring break on this google form log. Parents and students will also be able to access this log from the Lyons Elementary and Lyons Middle Senior website. If you have intermittent internet or don’t have WiFi access every day, you can download, screenshot, or print this reading log and submit by Monday, March 30th to be added to the contest.

What is the value of reading for pleasure?

  • Pleasure reading in youth is the most explanatory factor of both cognitive progress and social mobility over time.

  • Reading for pleasure can result in increased empathy, improved relationships with others, reductions in the symptoms of depression and dementia, and improved wellbeing.

  • Reading increases our understanding of our own identity, improves empathy and gives us an insight into the world view of others.

District Library: Sora– https://soraapp.com/welcome  or MYON
All students should be able to log onto the Sora and MYON app through CERAN

Parents will not be able to use their IC login information since the information is stored in a separate place from the student’s login information. Parents will need to login with their student’s credentials, which means they will need to log into the IC Parent Portal if their student(s) does not know their SVVSD student username and password. Please email: doering_kim@svvsd.org for additional assistance, if needed.

If the parent adds their public library card to the student’s Sora account they will have access to the Front Range, High Plains, and Lyons Public Libraries’ digital content for more adult choices.
